I'm My Own Grandpa (Click to hear the song!)

"I'M MY OWN GRANDPA!"

This is a really hilarious song called: "I'm My Own Grandpa."

Many, many years ago, when I was twenty-three,
I was married to a widow who was pretty as could be
this widow had a grown-up daughter who had hair of red.
my father fell in love with her, and soon they too were wed.
This made my dad my son-in-law and really changed my life,
now my daughter was my mother, cause she was my father's wife.
to complicate the matter, even though it brought me joy,
I soon became the father of a bouncing baby boy.

My little baby then became a brother-in-law to Dad,
and so became my uncle, though it made me very sad.
for if he was my uncle, then that also made him brother
of the widow's grown-up daughter, who, of course, was my stepmother. (Are we confused YET???) ??

Father's wife then had a son who kept him on the run,
and he became my grandchild, for he was my daughter's son.
my wife is now my mother's mother, and it makes me blue,
because, although she is my wife, she's my grandmother, too.
Now if my wife is my grandmother, then I'm her grandchild,
and every time I think of it, it nearly drives me wild,
cause now I have become the strangest case you ever saw
as husband of my grandmother, I am my own grandpa!

Oh, I'm my own grandpa.
I'm my own grandpa.
it sounds funny I know but it really is so,
Oh, I'm my own grandpa
I'm my own grandpa
I'm my own grandpa...
it sounds funny I know
but it really is so!

Dear Esteemed Students:

Your homework, as you know, is to write a one-page paper describing the conference talk that you attended and your feelings regarding it.

Please leave CONSTRUCTIVE (POSITIVE) COMMENTS, as the ENTIRE FREE WORLD is going to read your comments. If you have complaints or criticism, please either contact the author, discuss them in private with the speaker, or forever hold your peace!

The purpose here of this assignment is to inform the world, and the speakers who worked so hard to prepare for it, were appreciated.

Thanks again to Ms. Joanna Chou and NTUST AFL Department Chair, Dr. Lin Mao-sung, for your efforts in making the Conference the success that it was.

Best wishes,

Dr. J

Dear Students:

I hope you all had a HAPPY HALLOWEEN! Here's a video-message to you to inform you that our classes on Friday will be held at the "2005 Conference in ELT at Technical Colleges and Universities" on OUR CAMPUS in Building IB (201).

You are REQUIRED to attend the Conference during our class meeting times! Also, you must, on November 11th, give me a ONE-PAGE, DOUBLE-SPACED, 12-PT. FONT, 2.5 CENTIMETERS FROM EACH MARGIN (see video!) PAPER about:

1) The title of the talk (speech) you attended
2) Some detail about the topic
3) Your feelings about the talk (speech)
4) What you learned by attending the talk

Please remember that THERE IS NO PERFECT ANSWER; I just want to hear your perfectly honest feelings about the talk (speech) that you attended.

Thanks, and I hope you all had a HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

CLASS #3 (September 30, 2005)

Hello Students:

Thank you for being such a good class. Please remember that your homework is to read over all of Unit One and to look over the entire textbook and become familiar with its format and the CD that came with the book.

You should listen to the CD several times, at least once a day for three or five minutes. Also, the DVD is important for later parts of the class; we will discuss this. Remember not to violate copyright rules.

Please keep practicing the step-up and step-down methods we discussed in class. We will be doing an activity related to 'what I did this weekend' next week.

Thank you and please remember to come to class on time and prepared. ;-)

ESL Conversation Questions - What if...? (I-TESL-J)

This is a series of questions used for conversation classes on one of my favorite websites for learning and teaching English:The I-TESL JOURNAL.

CLICK TO SEE MORE... ESL Conversation Questions - What if...? (I-TESL-J): "Conversation Questions
What if...?
A Part of Conversation Questions for the ESL Classroom.
If you had only 24 hours to live, what would you do?
If a classmate asked you for the answer to a question during an exam while the teacher was not looking, what would you do?
If someone's underwear was showing, would you tell them?
If the whole world were listening, what would you say?
If one song were to describe your life, what song would it be?
If you bumped your car into another car, but nobody saw you do it, would you leave your name and address?
If you could ask God any one question, what would it be?
If you could be a bird, what would you choose to be?
If you could be a plant, what would you choose to be? "

CLASS MEEETING #2 September 23, 2005

WHAT WE DID IN CLASS TODAY

1) Dr. J discussed "weekend terms" (cultural differences, such as why do many Western people like to go to the ocean and sit on the beach whereas most Taiwanese would rather fish or have a bb-que on the beach at night?)

2) Timed Writing 7-minutes: "What I Plan on Doing This Weekend"

3) Student Group Work on weekend plans & Presentations of four groups

4) Dr. J gave Unit 1 Handouts (pp. 2-5) and we discussed basic layout of the book chapters

5) Dr. J discussed the STEP-UP STEP-DOWN intonation method. Each sentence in English has a high and low point. A question always goes up at the end and a statement like one that ends in a period always goes down like the Chinese third tone.

~~HOMEWORK FOR NEXT WEEK (SEPTEMBER 30, 2005)~~

1) Read over Unit 1 Handouts (pp. 2-5)

2) On page 2 do Lesson 2 (ALL). This should be pretty easy.

3) Be prepared for a group-led discussion on "What I Thought I Was Going to Do ... But What I Did Not Do This Weekend"

DAY #1 (September 16, 2005)Activities Completed:
1) Dr. J introduced himself (yawn!) and the basics of language-learning strategiesRemember that LANGUAGE IS A SELF-DEFENSE WEAPON and not a TOOL.
2) We looked over the course description and the contract students must sign saying they have read the course description and requirements (some parts are subject to change, depending on student abilities and interest levels)
3) Dr. J discussed the NAME-CARD that you must please present next week (a small card with your photo in the right corner and your Chinese and English names in the left top corner ... And something about yourself that you want me to know (anything is fine...e-mail address, hobbies, special talents or needs you might have)
4) We talked about textbook purchase ... and all of those exciting details.

~~~HOMEWORK~~~
  • Complete the NAME-CARD and bring it to class next week
  • Read over the Course Description and bring signed contract form to class
  • Create a weblog ("blog") named any name you like and bring the URL to class so that we can link all URL's together. NOTE: You will be posting homework to the class blog and not to your own blogs. Your own blog is for you to find relevant web-sites and articles using "BLOG THIS" using THE GOOGLE TOOLBAR!
